Thanks everyone for your help, sadly he passed away during the night.

on closer inspection thismorning it appears there was some sort of growth in the abdomen so I don't think I could of done anything.

I did measure him, he was almost 11" and just off 800g's. He was the smaller of the two.

anyway, thanks again.

Sorry you lost your fish Jon. To keep the remaining one healthy you still need to drive that nitrate level to well below 20 and strive to keep it there. I also recommend a diet upgrade. That Nutrafin is low quality. Try Omega1, Hikari or NLS pellets. Oscar should also have some substantial veg matter, and although all pellets have some degree of veg and spirulina, Oscars, being omnivorous need a bit more than the average pellet offers. Try some raw veg. If fish wont eat it get some veg based wafers or pellets. Also offer a more variety of treats. Earthworms, mealworms, fd food like krill, shrimp. Try some chunks of raw tilapia or shrimp. Again, and you may be tired of this being repeated, but water changes of more volume and frequency will work miracles for your remaining Oscar.

Thanks Suprd71 !! I'm doing a 75% water change as we speak so hopefully the numbers will improve soon.

Thanks also for the pointers for the food, I will try the new stuff asap.

for the shrimp, I'm assuming just normal frozen prawns / shrimp would be ok ? (good quality ones ofcourse)

Best of luck jdjames, I'm truly sorry that you lost your O :( But yeah, I was told a while ago (by Suprd actually) that clean water and a good diet takes care of 95% of the problems you'll ever have with an oscar (or any fish, really), and in my personal experience, that 5% of things that can happen that aren't taken care of by those are a lot easier to deal with if the basics are covered.

Frozen prawns/shrimp will be fine. What I do when feeding that is defrost it in the microwave then dice it up.

For veggies - defrosted, shelled (you don't have to shell them but I like to) peas tend to work pretty well. My O also loves the soft part of zucchinis.

Freeze dried krill is great as well - if you get some, soak it in something like Boyd's Vitachem overnight. It's a great way to get some extra vitamins into them. I soak all fresh food in it prior to feeding.

NLS -Large Fish Formula - 3 mm Sinking Pellets - 125 g

Cheers

One more info bite re shrimp/prawns... not Tiger Prawns. And, geez I sound like a picky old bugger here, BUT.. if it's not to late to change, cancel the Staple, its the low end of the Hikari line. Get the Gold. Also recommend medium size for all pellets. You may find that Oscar will waste some of the large size because he cant swallow them, and you may see crumbs spewing out his gills. Waste of food and more contribution to decaying water quality.
