ernie created the topic: Ammonia reading

Doing my weekly water testing today and I had a reading of 0.50 for ammonia. Nitrite 0 Nitrate 10. Tank has been set up for 14 months has 2 Aquamanta efx 1500 canister filters and tank is 5ft 150gallon, I have 2 x 11inch Oscars in tank. water change schedule 2x75% weekly. I retested ammonia and got same reading 0.50. I am using API Master test kit with 05/18 expiry. I had a new test kit that had not been opened tested ammonia with that and result was 0. Why would I get different readings from two separate test kits? Have done a couple of tests from each kit one reads 0.50 the other 0. Should I be concerned and has anyone else had this issue?

both read 0ppm?

If they both do, then the one reading 0.5ppm on your aquarium is more likely correct.

get household ammonia (should not bubble when shaken), put a drop into a cup of water, shake, and then test that.

What does your tap water read? With a 75% water change, your tank water could read some ammonia depending on your tap water.

Strange about the two kits reading differently. I wonder if how common that might be.

Ammonia test should be done before a water change and not after. Water conditioners can affect the ammonia test when conducted within a few hours of adding water conditioner.

Try testing ammonia today or tomorrow.

Another thought when I test my water I don't always use the same test tube to do the same test, would this matter? I completely rinse the tube in tank water before I test. Is this a possible cause?
