jnet created the topic: how do you diagnose dropsy

With my Oscar acting odd at the top of tank and then dying and my pled bloating up and then dying in the space of 2weeks is it possible its dropsy? How would I know?

Now my JD is acting funny and I'm getting very worried

I'm living my life, but not necessarily in the right order :)

How is he acting? Can you describe his behavior or video it?

It's my understanding that dropsy is a fatal condition and is caused by some other illness.
Here's wiki:
Dropsy is the buildup of fluid inside the body cavity or tissues of a fish. As a symptom rather than a disease, it can indicate a number of underlying diseases, including bacterial infections, parasitic infections, or liver dysfunction.

What's your WC schedule, frequency & amount?

THOSE WHO REFUSE KNOWLEDGE ARE DOOMED TO FAIL.

WATER CHANGES ARE THE LIFEBLOOD OF THIS HOBBY. IF YOU DON'T BELIEVE SO OR SIMPLY DON'T FEEL LIKE DOING THEM, RE-HOME YOUR FISH, SELL YOUR AQUARIUM & FIND ANOTHER HOBBY, AS YOU WILL FAIL UTTERLY, COMPLETELY, & MISERABLY.

Was this your 6 foot tank? Doesn't sound like enough water being changed. I had to do more than that with just an oscar in my 125 gallon. Are you sure your test kit is good? When it starts to go bad or your not doing the test exactly right the nitrates will read low usually.

Go do a water change - the solution to pollution is dilution.

I've gotten low readings from the api master test kit nitrate test. It read 3 to 5 times lower than the actual nitrate level. The problem was that I wasn't shaking solution #2 hard enough or long enough.

Fill test tube to line, add drops from solution #1 into test tube, cap and invert test tube a few times and set aside. *Shake solution #2 vigorously for 2 minutes.* "Shake it like it owes you money." Add drops from solution #2 into test tube, cap and shake test tube for 1 minute. Wait at least five minutes for color to develop.

What fish are in your 100 gal now?

Just jad this problem with a denisen barb. Thw fish scales raise up giving the body a pine cone type of look I ended up euthanizing it as it was already hemorrhaging buy the time I figured out what was happening

Daddadoo7 - I'd been meaning to ask about that. It sounds like everything is ok with your other fish?

yea I looked at the scales and I dont think its dropsy. the tanks a 5foot one 100gals

and its now got a raf, jd and rainbow shark

it did have my oscar and plec which were both about 11inches.

This tank used to have 2oscars in and ran fine and Ive been doing the tests for years so cant see that Ive been doing them all wrong this long. I could get new kit but the nitrates bottles are less than a year old.

again everything looks fine in tank today so Im hoping the 2 deaths are not linked

I'm living my life, but not necessarily in the right order :)
