when my oscar died we did like nearly 75% wc change; Im saying 25% a week as a min, some weeks it is more like 10days so Im taking an average. Some weeks I do two wcs etc.

I havent cleaned the filter out in a while so Im planning to do that this week and have a good clean and rearrange as the jd and shark are fighting now

I'm living my life, but not necessarily in the right order :)

J,
Nitrates are not the only dissolved solid/metabolite you have to worry about....there are also phosphates. silicates, minerals, etc present in the water column. These build up over time....& if you do insufficient WC's, these can build up to levels that can be quite toxic. If you keep small tetras, barbs, etc in a heavily planted tank, you can get away w/ that WC schedule.....but not large robust fish like Oscars, JD's, plecos, etc.......1/4 1X per week is simply insufficient. Fish like Oscars require bare minimum 75% 1X per week, regardless of filtration or size of aquarium. An aquarium, no matter how large, is just a glass/acrylic box, these types of fish put a huge strain on the bio-load of the tank, & no amount of filtration can preclude doing frequent massive WC's. Not digging into you, just my perspective. B)

THOSE WHO REFUSE KNOWLEDGE ARE DOOMED TO FAIL.

WATER CHANGES ARE THE LIFEBLOOD OF THIS HOBBY. IF YOU DON'T BELIEVE SO OR SIMPLY DON'T FEEL LIKE DOING THEM, RE-HOME YOUR FISH, SELL YOUR AQUARIUM & FIND ANOTHER HOBBY, AS YOU WILL FAIL UTTERLY, COMPLETELY, & MISERABLY.
