LeafsFan created the topic: Oscar breathing heavy

My oscar has been breathing heavy for a while, well I guess you would call it breathing.

Anyway his mouth is pretty much moving constantly and his gills. It's not a gasp or anything and it's not extremely heavy but I just want to see if I should be worried.

He acts normal he's eating good, and his water tests all test good. He's been like this for a while now and it didn't effect him. Also I don't think its lack of oxygen, I have a bubble wall in there and I even keep the water level a little lower for my HOB filter to cause a little bit more ripples and bubbles in the water. He also does not stay at the top of the water or anything he's always swimming around doing his think acting normal.

I used the api liquid test kit, he's in a 46 right now with an aquaclear 70 on it. I'm hoping it has something to do with the tank/filter because I have a 100gallon ordered for him that should be here Tuesday and I have a filstar xp-xl on the way that also should be here Tuesday so I will be running that and the aquaclear 70 once I get the 100 set up.

Yeah, the tank is definitely under filtered for an oscar. I am looking forward to your new set up. You might try changing out some water. I assume that the filter is cycled? Keep in mind also that your Filstar will take a couple of months to cycle once you set it up so your 100 would be cycling off the AC 70, which is far less than ideal. You will have to keep a close eye on your water parameters on the new tank. Make sure, as Frank says, to have an API test kit at the ready (I can't remember from your other post if you have one or not).

Can you upload videos right to here or do you have to go from YouTube? And also if I have the cycled aquaclear filter and put it on the 100 would that be alright to cycle the filstar or should I put the filstar on the 46 for a few weeks to get it going? I would set both up but I just don't have the room I'm already into moving stuff around to make room for the 100 ahahah

You can add a link to another site (like Photobucket), but Youtube seems to be the only way to have it viewed directly in an OFL thread.

Make sure to take off the "s" from the 'https" or it won't show up even from Youtube.

Put all your filters on the new tank with as much of the old filter media as possible. About 10% of the good bacteria will also reside in the substrate so you might want to add that too to help things along as well.

Upload it to YouTube and copy/paste the link to the thread. I would take some of the media from the ac and put in the new filter and run them both. Maybe the other members will chime in
