I've been reading up on the Denison barb for you to try to find out something. I found that they are a very sensitive species with care labeled as "moderate" which most similar fish are listed as "beginner".

Here are some other facts that might be the root cause..

They are very sensitive to temperatures, need high oxygen, low-ish pH, moving water (current), their diet is also very different than what flake food may provide.

They are also.... "prone to dropsy (prevented with warmer temperatures above 75F-79F, a varied diet, regular weekly water changes and oxygenated water) - sensitive to temps over 85F."

I have seen your tanks and I know how well you monitor them and maintain them. I think what's happening here is thier very specific needs aren't being met.

I'm no Expert though, I'm sure Darth will have better info for you!

I'm wondering if they require a very stable temp through out the entire tank, monitored with an electronic device of some sort. (Something very accurate)

I'm thinking a good set up would be more than one heater and multiple air bubblers to make sure every inch of water in the same temp and extremely oxygenated.
