LeafsFan created the topic: Bit of an odd question

My Oscar is in a 100gallon tank and has it all to himself. All my water tests are perfect and my oscar seems very happy and active he's always swimming around doing his thing. The last few days I have noticed that when I walk in the room his color is really light and faded. Just the way they get when stressed or anything, the weird thing is that it's like he only goes like that when noones in the room. When I first walk in he is all faded and then once he notices me he swims over to the glass closest to me and goes crazy like he wants food just the usual for my Oscar he acts perfectly normal it's just when I'm not in the room he has bad color. Is it possible he could be seeing his reflection in the glass? If so is there anything I can try to do to prevent it so he is not stressed out?

I wouldn't be concerned. It isn't necessarily a 'bad' colour, and if he's acting normally when he sees you I wouldn't worry about it at all.

Fwiw, my oscar Henry went really pale for about a week when I changed the tank lid from a timber hood to glass. The increased light levels made him feel more exposed so he turned pale to camouflage with his surroundings. If you've changed lighting or substrate or something to increase the 'lightness' of the tank he may just be matching it to feel safe. It'll stop when he gets used to it.

I used to be the same only a few months ago to be honest.

It was a combination of Henry getting into trouble so much I got desensitised to his shenanigans + just getting more comfortable with what I was doing with fish care in general that made it stop. For fish oscars really are incredibly smart, and with that comes weird moods, colour changes, silliness, getting into trouble, getting scrapes occasionally... on it goes.

I think Dave (Suprd) told me this, but if you feed them well, keep their nitrates below 20ppm (ideally below 10), and provide good filtration + enough room, you've eliminated 95% of the causes of health issues with oscars.
