Hmm. For the last week or so Adie's been getting a few white spots here and there. I haven't been able to get a good pic yet (I'll try tonight, partner has the camera), but they kinda look like this s1294.photobucket.com/user/zwanged/media/severum_bump1_zps5b1a6e3c.jpg.html though not as large (not my picture).

They've been healing up on their own accord but I noticed this morning she looks like she might be getting a couple more. Any ideas?

She's acting totally normal, if you count her terrorising my SDs, making nests everywhere and wiggling at Henry normal. Good appetite and all that.

Water parameters are good too (0ppm ammonia and nitrite, 5 - 10ppm nitrates as of this morning and today's w/c day).

It's only her - everyone else is fine and white spot free.

If the other fish aren't getting it and if it looks similar to that picture, I'd agree that it's not ick. What's the frequency at which they come and go?

A week or two ago she got 3 or 4 on her left side that appeared pretty much overnight. Those took about a week to heal up. She got 4 on her right side when the ones on her left were almost healed - they're in the process of healing up (two have gone, two have shrunk and just left a little discolouration) and as of this morning she has two really small white bumps (look not much bigger than a grain of sand) near the base of her dorsal fin.

Because they seem to be healing up of their own accord I'm not overly concerned, but it is a bit worrying that new bumps keep appearing. If they weren't I'd put it down to a mild scrape + swelling, or maybe a SD nip? It's weird though.

When you can, put a picture up.

When I hear about the size being like grains of sand, that does sound like ick. When my oscar had ick they did come and go but I'm not sure about the frequency. Besides, yours are healing ... ick is shed. Is the color white or a yellowish white?

I have one oscar with a white spot just like that under its chin. It has slowly been healing and it is the only spot like that on it but mine may be slightly different because mine is more like a big pin head rather then a grain of sand. Make sure that you are keeping your water really clean to promote proper healing. Post a picture when you can it may be helpful to see your fish.

@UNC: To clarify, the new two spots are the size of a large grain of sand, but the older, healing ones were the size of a small pimple like in the pic in the OP, but not quite as large and while a little raised, not as much as in the pic either. They're white, not yellow-white. When they heal up, they stop being raised then the discolouration fades, no shedding of them... That said, I literally just had a peek at her and can no longer see those two new spots... be funny if I was looking at actual sand grains :pinch: she does spend a lot of time throwing the sand around. The older spots are definitely not sand size though.

@Kjohnson: Thanks for the advice, but I'm 99% sure that whatever this is isn't caused by unclean water. The nitrates have never been above 10ppm in any of my tanks and this one is no exception. I am thinking about doing daily 50% w/cs though until this clears up though. Can't hurt.

Trying to think of any other info that might help... Not overstocked at all (1 oscar, 1 sev, 9 SDs in a 6x2x2 180 US gal), FX5 and Aqua one Nautilus as filtration (Aussie brand's answer to the FX5 but not quite as good).. temp at ~82F so I don't think lack of filtration's an issue.

W/c schedule is 3x 60 - 70% per week, but thinking about dropping to 2x 70% per week because nitrates are barely hitting 5ppm between w/cs and my partner's getting annoyed at the electricity bills

You seemed to know what you were talking about I was saying it more for the can't hurt factor. I think you have exactly what I have going on based on your description. Mine has a soar on the bottom of its chin so I was assuming that it was a soar from rubbing on the bottom of the tank or dragging decorations around.

Could be calcium deposits, although I think they generally show on fins. They are something that comes and goes, and are harmless. Kinda throwing a guess at this Lam.

@kjohnson: No worries! You've got me wondering if maybe she's getting these spots because she's scraping herself on stuff in the tank. She's been going pretty nuts clearing out sand from strange places, and during feeding she sometimes shoves herself under driftwood and that.

Could a minor scrape turn into a pimple type thing though? It doesn't with Henry, but that said when I originally rescued Adie she did have those 3 white bumps on her side from injuries, and these do look really similar, except smaller and not fuzzy...

@Dave: All good, I'm stumped too  I guess the only course of action I can take is do some daily w/cs and wait and see whether this gets better or worse.

Mine isn't fuzzy either. The best way I could discribe it is a pimple as well. Mine has also been going nuts as well. I bet is a soar or thin spot from rubbing on stuff. Mine is constantly moving stuff. Stuff that seems way to big for it to move but it doesn't care if the stuff isn't where it wants it to be. : )
