The only thing I understand & could find about Rainbowfish ( as far as basic needs) is that they need a basic PH.....7.6 - 7.8 & up. From what I've seen, other than the split fins, they appear to be OK.....but my supposition is that perhaps if they don't get hard. alkaline water, they may not do as well? Not talking from experience, never owned them, just a hunch.

THOSE WHO REFUSE KNOWLEDGE ARE DOOMED TO FAIL.

WATER CHANGES ARE THE LIFEBLOOD OF THIS HOBBY. IF YOU DON'T BELIEVE SO OR SIMPLY DON'T FEEL LIKE DOING THEM, RE-HOME YOUR FISH, SELL YOUR AQUARIUM & FIND ANOTHER HOBBY, AS YOU WILL FAIL UTTERLY, COMPLETELY, & MISERABLY.

I have hard water with a ph of 7.8.-8. The boesemani rainbows I had lived 7-8 years.

Injuries to fins can look like white spots larger than ich. Sort of like an abrasion from being nicked.
