sammie created the topic: Splashing at the top of the aquarium

Is it normal for oscars to splash at the top of the tank? I can hear it happen when I'm not even in the same room, then I will go to the aquarium to see water all over the ground. Should I put a rock on top of the glass lid? I'm wondering if the oscar is strong enough to get the lid open when he does this.

Advice is much appreciated. Thanks!

Don't worry about it, this happens with every Oscar, certainly happened with all the Oscars I've ever had. What happens sometimes as little flies get under the lid, I think possibly attracted by its uneaten food. Anyway, the Oscars will often jump and try and catch them, this is when you hear them splashing around. It could also be them fighting as well. Whatever it is, it's nothing to worry about. The only advice I would give any Oscar owner is always have a secure lid on the tank. Because Oscars are jumpers, it's so easy for them to accidentally jump out of the tank, it's happened on many occasions before and it will happen again if people don't have the proper aquarium setup.

Okay. Thanks for the info. Do you think a 10 inch oscar could break out of a 4' long glass lid that's about 6' deep?

No, I doubt whether an Oscar is going to be able to break glass that thick. Just make sure that there isn't a big enough gap for the Oscar to slip through, believe me people have told us that their Oscars have managed to slip through the tiniest gaps that you would never believe a fish would fit through.
