My Oscar will suddenly darts around in his tank almost like he is getting spooked or shocked, can this just be his personality developing?

He is about 5-6 inches long so we are guessing he is 5-6 months old

How big is the tank? First suggestion, assuming the tank is suitable size, is to keep lights low or even off. Oscar is light sensitive, really doesn't require tank lights. That may also be the reason he got recent knocks on the noggin. Assuming again that all is well with his living conditions, darting around isn't any cause for concern. Its a juvie Oscar, comparable to an awkward teenager of our species!

When does this happen? Could it be that he is being spooked? One other thing that can make fish dart around and that is parasites on the skin. Have a good look and make sure there's nothing that looks like parasites attached to the skin. Check your water conditions as well, ammonia and nitrite must be absolutely zero and no higher. We normally prefer nitrate levels to remain under 40 ppm at all times, preferably no higher than 20 ppm.

Ok tank is 75gallon, amonia is 0, nitrites are 0 and nitrates are between 10-20 ppm. There is no evidence of parasites. The tank is in our bedroom and he usually does his darting around in the middle of the night if we get up to use the bathroom or let our dog out

Good tank, good water. Oscar is easily spooked by sudden light, even if its across the room. They are quite sound sleepers as well, so sudden waking may send him for a quick swim. All in all nothing to worry about. As for his age... when getting a baby Oscar from lfs, say 1-2 ins, its already 2-3 months old. So add 3 months to the time you got him and that's very close to his age. By one yr old he will likely be 8-10ins.

Is he just darting off like a bull in a china shop?

Or is he fish-flopping off the gravel? or "flashing" in other words..
