Joshuaharestad created the topic: Tank Upgrade

Hi all!

I am new to the site and a new Oscar owner. I had a question about upgrading my tank. Right now I have a young tiger oscar, about 2.5 inches long including tail. I also have a leopard plecostomas, about 3 inches long. They get along for the most part. The pleco used to chase the oscar around a bit, but the oscar pecked a few times and they seem to have worked it out. Now before you get mad I know my tank isn't big enough. I have a 50 or 55 gallon lightly planted tank. I monitor water level's with API liquid testing for ammonia and test strips for everything else. Thus far, them being small, everything is fine.

My question is this. I'd rather upgrade my tank sooner than later, but I do have to save for a few months. How long do you think I have, based on time, water levels, fish size, or other means, to upgrade and ensure that no stunting of either fish has occurred. Obviously I will upgrade before they have actual trouble having space to swim, but the plan is sooner. Also, what size tank do you recommend. I figure 100+ gallons.

Thanks!
Joshua

Hello Joshua and welcome to OFL. You are on the right track and seem to have a good base of info. You say Leopard pleco, I will assume this is a Gibbiceps, or Sailfin pleco. They get very big, are a huge bioload of any tank they inhabit. I have one, way over a foot long. I did keep this pleco in a 72x18 125g tank with a big adult Oscar. Space was not inadequate, but just ok. I had to do big volume water changes every 4-5 days. Best advice I can offer is go no less than a 125g, 6foot tank. If you can step up a bit further, a 6x2x2 180g is a very good tank for big Oscar and pleco combo. Gobs of filtration to match of course. For now, with both fish having quick growth rate, get as much clean water thru the tank as possible. Twice weekly, and in 6-8 weeks probably every 2-3 days will be in order. So, yeah, tank upgrade asap!

I may not be the Boss, but I'm ALWAYS right!

Thank you for the advice. I believe he/she is a sailfin. Now I'm trying to think where I can fit a tank that size. Lol. I'll manage though. Love both fish!
