oscar.albino.cubby created the topic: Red place on gill plate

My Oscar has developed a red place on his right gill (see picture). He has moved a lot of gravel, so I was hoping he had just bruised himself. This morning, I notice it isn't quite as red, but there seems to be a little white pimple or nodule looking thing right in the middle of it. He is still eating, but I noticed he has been hanging under where the filter pours back into the water and he's doesn't seems to be a little lethargic. What is wrong with him? How can I help him?

That looks to be an infection of sorts. First course of action with any ailment is to tend to water quality. Make sure the fish always has plenty of fresh water, via large volume water changes performed on a regular( at least once weekly, the more the better) schedule. Some background please.. how old is the fish, size of tank, what have you been doing for water changes to this point, any bit of info regarding the fish and his environment will help. I could recommend a medication, but water comes first.

Thank you for the reply. That was very kind. He's 5 years old. He lives in a 75 gallon aquarium by himself. We change 20-30% of the water on a weekly basis. I bought him a dozen feeder minnows a week ago, and he may have gotten an infection from that. (no more feeder minnows). I researched everything I thought it might be and bought every corresponding cure. I did a complete water change and deployed all medications. This morning, the red place on his gill looks much less inflamed, and he's acting normally again. I think we're alright now.

Thats good news. For the future, I suggest a higher volume water change. 75g isnt really a big area for an adult Oscar. While doing a change, there is only positive results doing a 75% or more change. Water can never be too clean!
