I bought a baby oscar about 2 weeks ago. He is about 2.5-3 inches and has been doing great in his new tank. I have been feeding him API cichlid pellets which he loves. I'm almost worried that he loves them too much. My question is how many pellets should I feed him at a time? I feed him twice a day. Everywhere I looked online suggested feeding as much as he could eat in 3 min or until just before you notice his stomach bulge. I am unable to notice his stomach and I stop at 3 min but he always seems so hungry still and looks like he wants to keep eating. That time frame ends up being 16-20 pellets a feeding (32-40 a day) and I'm worried that is too many. I think he would eat all day if I let him though. So how many pellets a feeding does everyone else feed their oscar of a similar size? I'm looking for actual numbers since time and visual don't work as well for me. Thanks!

Welcome to our community Sarah

Okay, I really shouldn't get too worried about how much you are feeding your new Oscar. I understand what you mean about not being able to notice the stomach swelling, this is normally most noticeable when they are very small, as they get bigger is more difficult to tell by looking at the stomach.

I don't think you are doing too badly at all. Just put in a few pallets and that the Oscar eat them completely. Just do that for three minutes two or three times a day and your Oscar will be perfectly well fed. Honestly, once you start counting out pellets you will start to get too fussy. The 2 1/2-three-minute rule is perfectly adequate.

I may not always be right, but I am always the BOSS :-)

Welcome to the site. Keep in mind that what goes in must also come out. Be certain the little one is producing waste. What size pellets are you using? Is he getting all the pellet in? Not spewing crumbs out his gills? Do you hear a crunching sound?

Oh he is definitely producing waste lol. Plenty of fish poop in there so I check closely for ammonia, nitrite, and nitrates. The pellets are about 2mm. And yes, he gets the pellet completely in and I hear the crunching. I have yet to see any crumbs coming out of his gills.
