sammie created the topic: Hikari Gold

Hi Guys,

I have been feeding my oscar 4 large Hikari Gold pellets in the morning and 4 at night. I have been doing this for quiet a while now. My O is about 10" and roughly a year old. Do you think this diet is sufficient for his physical needs, or is less/more better?

These pellets have all the nutrients that your Oscar needs. However, if you want to supplement with some treats from the freezer counter at your fish store then please do so. But we always recommend that pellets should be the the primary food for your Oscar.

Hikari is a pretty good food. Medium grade I would call it. At your fish's size and age I would feed once a day, but not every day. He may like a little variety. Some tasty treats like freeze dried krill, tubifex worms, shrimps. Live earthworms, mealworms, crickets. Maybe he will eat some fruit pieces, Huge bonus if he will, extra vitamin is always good. You can offer some raw fish chunks. Tilapia is cheap in the groc store, all my cichlids like it. A good veg based pellet is a good addition to omnivorous cichlids diet. I use Northfin kelp wafers. NLS Algaemax also high quality. Hikari Excel is designed for herbivorous cichlids like African Mbuna, but is a decent offering for any cichlid. Aids in digestion. Its possible your fish will snub the Hikari Gold at some point, kinda boring eating the same old same old. Mix it up, I bet your fish will respond favorably

8-10 large pellets is a fair meal for once a day. Feeding Oscar isnt an exact regimen. I always recommend for adults to give at least a couple days a week no feed to properly digest, process and ultimately expel. You can feed 2, skip one, feed one skip 2, it all works out. Remember an adult Oscar can go a silly amount of time with no food, literally several weeks and suffer no ill effects. Fish would have to be very neglected to have a malnourish problem. Its easy however to overfeed, and the gluttons will surely eat every time you offer.
