So my Oscar is by himself in a 75 gallon. He is now 5.5 years old. Over the last 2 years, he has become dependent on eating Nightcrawlers only. I have tried starving him and offering a pellet every day, but I end up giving in within 5 days or so.

I still do 75% water changes e very other day. And nothing about the water chemistry or temp has changed over the last 4-5 years.

So my issue is he doesn't have any interest in food half the time. Some days Ill come to the tank and he flares and rams the tank trying to get to me. No food.

So he has had maybe 3 total worms in 2 weeks. I have tried offering pellets and he will either ignore it, or it will go in his mouth briefly, and then spit out.

As old as he is, I was just going let him live on nightcrawlers until he died of old age. But he has never been like this before.

He looks good. He doesn't have the greatest color anymore. He is darker than he was, but no HOTH, or anything else that would give me the impression that he is hurting.

So what would you guys recommend?

Here is a pic of him

The erosion around the nostril area is hith related. This is a rare case of water quality not being the issue, rather the fish is lacking the nutrients and vitamins a balanced diet provides. Oscar needs Vitamin C in his system. At his age and size the fish can easily go many weeks without eating, and truth be told you should have made him eat something else besides worms before a 2yr stretch of worms only. Try fresh fish like tilapia, or raw shrimp. Try some freeze drieds like krill, shrimp or tubifex worm. Once you find something he will take, add Boyd's Vitachem to it and sprinkle with spirulina powder.

I know I wasnt doing him any favors with his diet. So Just tried throwing in a floating pellet and he ignored it. I am thawing out a tilapia fish and will try that as you recommended.

Anything else I should do?

I know I screwed up. I didn't mean to do that to him. I absolutely love him.

So as an update. I cut up a small piece of tilapia. I threw one small piece in and he ate it. Ignored any others. I had to get them back out.

So do I wait a few days and try the tilapia again, or something different food wise?

For me trying live food has helped with fish that refuses to eat. Even if for example mosquito larva are small my Oscar enjoyed chasing them. Once they are eating it has been possible to switch them to pellets

I guess I am going to just keep up water changes, offer a pellet a day until he eats one or dies from starvation. I don't see any alternative.
