Theaggressiveoscar created the topic: Baby arowana won't eat

Hello!
Yesterday I bought a baby silver arowana (about 6") and I have tried feeding everything and it won't take a single bite, I've tried sinking cichlid pellets, cichlid bio- gold, frozen brine shrimp, Mysis shrimp, crushed pellets....nothing.....

Whenever I get near the tank the little guy gets soo scared :S he hides behind my pvc overflow
He's in my 150g tank with ~48 baby green terrors (and although he has plenty of room to swim in he only stays in one half of the tank and swims into the glass continuosly  )

Could it be that maybe he just needs some time to acclimate or does he need a certain type of food?
At the store I was told that he was eating pellets and that he was wild caught.

any help is greatly appreciated :)

How big are the GT's? Maybe he's been eating and you just haven't noticed yet.

they are about 1", probably less. I'm sure they are not getting eaten  the arowana does ot chase them around or anything, the GTs stay in one side of the tank while the aro stays in the other side

what he's been fed at the LFS? best thing you should do is, feeding him with his regular food
i did some research before i bought mine, according to what i have gathered, aros don't like pellets. they prefer meaty food.
try giving him chunks of fish or a few guppies. just be careful when giving feeder fish. they might carry diseases
and your GT fry will start to disappear soon.

The lady at my lfs said she was feeding pellets (don't know which kind)
I'm not making any progress.......tried to give some bloodworms today...nothing....tried cut tilapia fillets....nothing........
So frustrated!!!! :(

Sometimes when I drop mysis shrimp he goes to the surface and bites it but since it is frozen he gets away, and then when I thaw the shrimp he won't take them because they do not float and are at the bottom.

!!!!!!!!

Oh, and this morning the poor thing got sucked up by my pvc overflow (I don't know how that could have happened!) and got beat up on the way down to the sump, now it has black spots on him and a torn fin  This is not going well.......

Sorry to here this bud. Can you get some live crickets? They'll float and move around maybe he'll go for them. Otherwise you could try soaking thawed shrimp in Kent's garlic extract or something comparable. This has been useful in getting fussy eaters to eat.

Word of caution though, if you start feeding live food the Aro may start looking at them baby GT's a bit differently.

i agree with live crickets.

Had an arro way back in the days .. wouldn't eat anything ... for a few days. tried everything you said ... but the crickets worked. the movement from the crickets (making waves) stirred the arro ... and started eating. or live meal-worms.

hi there

1. sorry bro, just read your post on your silver.
2. it is just a juvenile adjusting itself in a new environment.
3. it shall take a few days more before it begins feeding.
4. now, what we do in the orient for juveniles.
5. lower the water in the tank to half.
6. light on 24/7, no sudden movement near or around tank.
7. feed it lightly then once it stablizes, you may feed more.
8. what is good for juveniles: small frogs, pellets, mealworm, cut prawn.
9. normally, we off "crickets".
10. yes, crickets for we fear that the aro gets hooked on crickets and will not eat anything else except crickets.
11. maintain excellent water parameters with very regular wc at about 20% (not more than that!)
12. i hope that this will ease you up further.
13. happy aroing!
