My pleco will shoot to the top of the tank, 24" tall and shoot back down like he is gulping air, does not happen often and seems to not matter how much oxygen in the tank. he just did it after a WC and lotsa oxygen in tank.

just curious if there any known reason for this.

water temp is 79f

It's a thing they do, and it doesn't spell trouble right away.

Pleco's an adsorb oxigen into their blood through their bellies by ingesting a gulp of air.
They are buildt for survival and a decent sized Common f.i. can survive in very bad waterconditions...or even OUT of the water.
24 hours out of the water is not unheard of and should your Pleco ever "jump" or escape from the tank, ALLWAYS try to put him back into the water, for i have seen Pleco's survive by their "belly-breathing" for many ,many hours.

BUT....you need to watch that your water is aerated enough and that the watertemperature is not to high for your Pleco, for that will make it harder for a fish to get that oxigen back.
Best way to do that, is by creating ripples on the water's surface of some kind, to get movement of the watersurface.

And check your thermometer and heater, by measuring the temp on several different spots in your tank.
Just to be sure....although a 79oF should be fine for your Pleco.

I used to have a pleco that did that occasionally, so long as your water is okay, I don't suppose you got much to worry about.

I may not always be right, but I am always the BOSS :-)
