Try Animal Planet's River Monsters. In the special "Giants", they can weigh up to 500 pounds.

MattsOscars wrote: From what I was reading, they've apparently been introduced in the wild in some parts of Asia, don't remember where exactly, but they're considered an invasive species!

But apparently there, they have no natural predators, so they just grow huge and eat everything.

Malaysia and Thailand are its invaded places. Other than causing ecological problems, they killed several people in those countries.

i am not sure about the wild issue here...we haven't seen one in the wild....
people will surely be happy catching them.... you can imagine how happy a
hungry people who can get a 5 footer fish...LOL!

that pic was also taken at the breeding pond at Avilon Zoo where people pay
some amount to see and explore the biggest zoo in the area.... and pay
additional bucks just to feed the young arapaima...(yearling)

Yes, Himantura chaophraya, Mekong Giant Catfish, Siamese Giant Carp, and Dog-eating Catfish are bigger than Arapaima gigas.

That's why the post says among the largest, and doesn't declare them the largest period.
