i almost got one a while back. my lfs had a big one they were selling. ... the only reason i didn't pull the trigger is because the employee there told me it only eats live food. ... i really don't want to mess with that at this stage in the game.

but i think they are super cool and i think you should get one J.

....

also good info Matt. :)

I'm sure a larger one that has been raised on live food would be difficult to get onto pellets or even prepared food, but not impossible. I'm slowly getting my big new aro to accept pellets, so it can be done.

Awesome info! However, it brings up some questions for me.

My friends are a group of great guys, but they don't get me and what they call my "fish thing". That said, when I got a new place and was setting up a bigger tank for my Oscar, they went to the store and got me a Dinosaur Bichir, because it "looked cool". So I put spencer maxwell (named after a friend who moved away) in my Oscar tank after looking into their compatibility. They get along fine, but Spencer is a very active fish all the time, and has gotten rather pale, which from this info is not normal. I happened to have the lights off when I read this post, and had for a while, and I went over and checked my tank. Lo and behold a calm Spenc hanging out. So I fed him, and he ate right away, which is great because I was concerned he wasn't getting enough food. So my question is this: is this normal? should he be pale and constantly swimming or hanging out at the bottom? if it's not normal, what are possible causes and how can I resolve this so he is happy?

thanks,
George

Well they are low to no light loving buggers. Mine would only get really active at night so that's when I fed him. Keep feeding him with the lights off and see if he doesn't start getting some color back.

Also what kind of foods are you offering him?

Well, then just feed him like a catfish lol, they like to eat at night, so once the lights have been out for 30 minutes or so, try feeding him then.

His diet sounds pretty balanced so stick with it B)
