Got the "go ahead" from my wife today for a basement community tank.

I am currently in the process of setting up a 150 gallon 1 Oscar, 1 Convict, 8 Silver Dollar tank in my upstairs dining room, which should be completed within a few weeks.

Here is a picture of my basement. I have this strange "island" in the middle (house was built in the 1960s). The "island" is very solid around the edges, according to my "thumping". I suspect it is some sort of concrete planter that was later covered up with plywood and carpet. Sounds hollow in the middle. The columns that you see covered with paneling are steel "pipes" that hold the house up. I know this because half the basement is unfinished, and there are two more of these steel pipes (not covered with paneling) in the unfinished portion of my basement.

The distance between the columns is 81 inches. The width of the "island" is 43 inches.

IMO, this island is the perfect place to have an aquarium that can be viewed from a 360 degree angle.

There is currently no electricity to the island, but I can make that happen.

Any suggestions?

I had delusions of a reef tank here, but I am realistically not ready for that.

Thinking of a grand freshwater community tank with lots of movement.

Ah, that would look incredible!

But the first thing to do is to check out how structurally sound that island is. Anything 81'' by 43'' is going to be HEAVY.

Where will your filters go? In the planter? For a tank that size you're probably looking at a sump.

Ooh, the possibilities for fish in a tank that size! Central American community with colourful big cichlids, or schools so enormous you can't count them anymore, or ... dare I say it ... African cichlid community!

Frontosa school and company, or open water malawi haps in every colour ...

Oscars in a group of 5! With a proper, honest to goodness common pleco grown out to full size ... a three foot monster! A school of silver dollars that will make Eddie green with envy.

So, yes. Do this. For all of our sakes. Because you can swim with your fish if you build this.

8-10 angelfish combined with 12 corydoras panda and a giant school of imperial tetra (Nematobrycon palmeri) :D and to finish it off 3-4 royal pleco or panaque. and lots of plants, valisneria, swords, cabomba, anubias and a giant centerpiece of mopani wood.

190 gallon malawi

40 inches wide 0.0. I would put a silver aro in there. At tank that size the possibilities are almost endless.

Lol @ at african tank. There would be sooooo many fish in there.

72x24x40, 300 gallons

I would put 100 Cory cats and 300 rummy nose tetras. :-p

Wow I wish I had that in my house. I'd personally leave a lip around the edges for people to sit/stand on to look in the tank. I would put a large tall wet/dry sump on the back side next to the pole and cover it with a cabinet. You could get a whole lot of media in something like that! I think a cichlid community would look great with lots of silver dollars and a couple Oscars to run the place!

What are you thinkinb about for filtration?

72x40x36 would be a nice fit there, but it would be really heavy tank, even when it is acrylic.

Heh, great ideas! Thanks!

I am absolutely not worried about the weight. The basement floor is concrete covered with vinyl. I am 99% certain that the island is a concrete "planter" or something of that nature that was later boxed in. It is very solid around the outer portion. Only the very middle of it gives a hollow sound when struck. I would estimate that at least the outer 12 inch circumference is solid.

I'll have to give this more thought. :)

Oooh I wish I was that lucky!! My wife complained about my 120 being set up before we moved. I think a stellar SA community tank would be in order here with a tank that size.

Thanks everyone, for your input.

Way I see it I have three basic ways I can go:

(1) El Cheapo: 75 Gallon Tank from PetSmart + accessories. Nice community tank with no real theme, just fish that can get along together. Total cost: probably less than $500. Filtration could be pretty much anything appropriate.

(2) Large non-custom glass tank: I'm thinking a Marineland 72x24x30 220 gallon (as suggested by Suprd71). I could do a Central/South American cichlid tank, an African cichlid tank, or just a ginormous community tank. Filtration would be an FX5, plus a possible second smaller canister or HOB. Total Cost: Upwards of $2500.

(3) Go-For-Broke: Large custom eurobraced acrylic tank that fills most of the space. Filtration would be some sort of large sump. Stocking could be pretty much anything. Total cost: Probably over $5k.

No matter which option I choose, I'll need some sort of stand to get the tank at eye level, since the "island" isn't very high off the floor.

Being realistic, I will probably choose option 1 or 2. Should be able to make either one of those happen this year. If I try for option 3, I'm looking at 2014 at the earliest, plus a possible divorce. ;-)
