How many tiger barbs can live peacefully in a 40 gal with reg water changes. and does the size matter?

I would guess about 10 tiger barbs. I like tiger barbs, they are pretty cool. But nippy little buggers.

Are your filters cycled?

40GL? TB's do better in large schools, are are actually less "nippy" in larger schools. If these are the only fish in the tank, & you have a mature biological filter, I would state 2 dozen easily. One of my personal faves as far as tropical fish go. They would look great as a single species tank that was well planted. B)

THOSE WHO REFUSE KNOWLEDGE ARE DOOMED TO FAIL.

WATER CHANGES ARE THE LIFEBLOOD OF THIS HOBBY. IF YOU DON'T BELIEVE SO OR SIMPLY DON'T FEEL LIKE DOING THEM, RE-HOME YOUR FISH, SELL YOUR AQUARIUM & FIND ANOTHER HOBBY, AS YOU WILL FAIL UTTERLY, COMPLETELY, & MISERABLY.

What if theres also one baby cichlid in there? With both types of the fish in the 40 gal (im gonna move the jack dempsey to a larger tank within the next to months), what do you think is a good amount of tiger barbs then? i plan on upgrading to like a 20 or 30gal for the barbs later. Also i have 4 tiger barbs currently, 2 of which are larger and the other 2 are babies. Will this matter in them being able to school or should the next set i buy be bigger that the ones i currently have? The jack dempsey is aabout 1.5.

You could put a dozen in there with the JD. JD's grow slow, and if you do get a longer tank for the JD, then you can add another dozen. If you don't get a longer tank, then you will have to think about rehoming either the barbs or JD later on, since the JD will more likely kill the barbs. In the wild, JD's hunt mollies, however they don't have a really good success rate, and spend quite a bit of time eating algae or things growing off of the algae.

I would go for larger barbs due to the JD being in there.

get a liquid test kit before the bigger tank. Test strips are not that accurate.

do you think that my oscars death had something to do with nitrites spike on the strips? is it my filter pad causing it? even after all the water changes?

The nitrite reading could have been much higher than what is on the strip. Even if you do a 50% water change and nitrites were 2ppm before the water change, 1ppm of nitrite is still toxic.
