black ghost knife fish are nocturnal if i'm not mistaken

Don't dwell on what went wrong. Instead focus on what to do next

I prefer something that can stay in a 50 gallon community tank.

Not a catfish or bottom dweller? Not to the best of my knowledge, not FW anyway.

THOSE WHO REFUSE KNOWLEDGE ARE DOOMED TO FAIL.

WATER CHANGES ARE THE LIFEBLOOD OF THIS HOBBY. IF YOU DON'T BELIEVE SO OR SIMPLY DON'T FEEL LIKE DOING THEM, RE-HOME YOUR FISH, SELL YOUR AQUARIUM & FIND ANOTHER HOBBY, AS YOU WILL FAIL UTTERLY, COMPLETELY, & MISERABLY.

In my country, pictus are expensive.

i keep a black ghost knife with my discus, it does get rather big but hasn't even bothered my neon tetras. bichirs are also mostly nocturnal.
But keeping in mind fish that are nocturnal usually are to eat other fish that sleep during the night, so keeping one in a community tank with guppies and stuff will probably never work out.

160 gallon south american
190 gallon malawi

how come no one has said Rapheal catfish or striped dora etc to whatever else people call it.

Its a night fish you rarely see them. They will be fine with community fish come striped or spotty. Grow about 11inches but very slowly should be ok in 55gal I would say 75gal plus ideal but I kept a pair in a 100gal no problems.

I'm living my life, but not necessarily in the right order :)
