Lammergeier created the topic: Handfeeding Freddy 19 Feb 2015

So I went out and got a Freddy. Yep, this is one of the gumtree rescues I've been babbling about lately.

Tada (not my pic):

This was the picture my partner received of her (finally) after days of nagging the seller. He had trouble finding her apparently, and seeing the tank in person it was obvious why. The water was legit brown, and so opaque I literally couldn't see the back of the tank (it was a 6x2x2). Her tankmates (that I could see) included 2 large oscars, a 30cm jag (who had a curved spine due to stunting), a grey salvini, and a bunch of catfish and other random assortments. Had to wait 20 minutes for the seller to get her out of the tank because he literally couldn't see her in there. Fun times. The seller had not had her for that long (a few months is what I was told) and originally kept her in a 4ft with the salvini and some other things, but 'got bored' after a couple of months so chucked her and the salvini into the 6ft to see what'd happen.

This fish was sold to me as a P. friedrichsthalii, but I would not be surprised if she turned out to be a female jag. I can't really tell at the moment due to how greyed out she is (fairly certain she's a little female). She can't be a loisellei because we don't have any in Aus. She's about 10cm long (sold to me as 12 - 14cm lol) at the moment, so she's taken the title of 'smallest fish' from Ganbie.

When I got her home the first thing I did was test the water she came in for KH, GH, pH and nitrate:

For the curious; from left to right: KH = 0 - 18ppm (one drop and it went green), GH = 18 - 36ppm (2 drops and it went green), pH = 6 (or less), my kit only goes down to 6, nitrate = 160ppm (plus?)

Started an incredibly slow drip acclimation after panicking and flailing around like an idiot for a couple of minutes. After ~3 hours I increased the drip rate, and around 4 - 4.5hrs into drip acclimation I tested the nitrate again. I kept notes of how much water I took out of the bucket, and kept tabs on how much was left to figure out how much I'd diluted things. I *really* wanted to know what the actual original nitrate reading was. This is what I got when 10% of her initial water was left:

So around 40ppm was left. 400ppm initial nitrate? :S .

An hour or so later, and into her new house she went (a 4x18). Everyone, meet Tiamat:

She's gorgeous! I can see why you can't really tell Freddy or Jag! Though I think I can see some yellow...

Throw yourself in- use the wrong words, try different foods, kiss random fish. It's an adventure!

That's great!! I feel relieved for the fish. Sweet little guy. Definitely a little Jaggish looking.

Any progress on the male Jag you were seeking out?

Patience, Ben, patience ;) but don't worry, she hasn't affected that effort at all.

If she turns out to be a jag then I'm fine with it. Paid $20 for her which is half of what I'd have to pay for a female jag of equivalent size (jags are not common at all down here), and 1/3 what I'd usually have to pay for a Freddy. But she is completely greyed out at the moment and her diet was... lacking, to say the least.

Texted the seller to ask what she ate and got "pellets and flake, but she only ate the flake" :pinch:

I got her to eat some bloodworms tonight but she wouldn't touch pellets. But some food is better than nothing; she's not emaciated to the point of being close to death but definitely too skinny.

Should I bug you too, even though I know what's happening, and even names? :P
