It is simple, but really, really nerve-wracking. A couple of things I didn't mention: I often add a tiny bit (a small pinch) of seachem safe to the water in the bucket to neutralise any ammonia/nitrite in it during acclimation. Was a necessity for Tia (Freddy) due to increasing pH increasing the toxicity of those compounds, but I did it for this guy as well because I tested ammonia/nitrite for him and got positive readings for both.

I also keep a towel or the bucket lid over the bucket unless I'm adjusting the drip (minimises stress a bit).

Re: HITH, I'd guess the holes themselves are 0.5 - 1mm deep. Roughly the same on both sides, but I think the right side (not shown in the pic) may be slightly worse.

On another note; since I've gotten him, and after that first night he's been acting hyper-aggressive - lunging at the glass etc. Sadly, while I at first assumed he was being aggro in much the same way as Mittens (half a game, half territorial), it turns out that the poor guy is just terrified of people :( Figured it out when both Mr. Lam and myself went into the spare room to move something; he completely flipped out at the glass then ping-ponged and hid for like 2 hours. It'll take a while for him to warm up to us. No wonder he wouldn't eat when people were in the room.

I guess that's what happens when you keep a jag for nearly 2 years in a 2ft glass box with nothing to hide in or behind, while having your friends poke at the glass to goad a reaction out of him.

Edit: Hah, bloodworms to the rescue again. He (begrudgingly) ate pellets. I'll give him a day or two to get used to them then start alternating between vitachem and epsom salt.

I forgot to mention in the OP that in addition to pellets he was given feeders every week or so as a treat :pinch: luckily his poop's normal but epsom salt can't hurt.

Good job lamm, that fish definitely looks to have a lot of potential. If it is hith it looks pretty mild, but it could just be minor head injuries from the fish freaking out.

SWEEET! My Thor was neglected and not in the best condition when I got him. Clean water and a big improvement in diet and he is now a show quality beast. Jag is a tough and resilient cichlid, yours will be well in no time. Congrats!

Thanks so much everyone. I can't wait to see how he turns out after a month or two of TLC :D

I really hope you're right Rob re: HITH, but it's fairly symmetrical on both sides of his head, and I'm thinking if those marks were just scrapes it wouldn't be. The erosion around the nostrils is the same on both side as well. It is really minor if it is HITH though - a true testament to how tough Jags are.

I'm thinking next time I have updates on him or Tia I'll just make a combined thread and put updates of both of them in there.

I still can't decide whether to put in driftwood for him or leave as is, thoughts? I'm going to leave his pipe in there either way, he's been hiding in it a lot the last day or so.

I have to ask, Suprd- is this the big Thor you're talking about? The one Ganbie's waiting on to grow? If so, Lamm, Thor might have competition sooner rather than later. You're really good with fish dude. /hugs

Thanks dude, and yeah, I think Thor's currently the biggest cichlid kept by a regular on here.

Ganbie's catching up slowly, lol. Seems to be devoting most of his energy lately to growing more blue speckles and filling out a bit.

Now you have Ganbie AND Zuzu to compete with Thor. ;)

I have to say, is there any harm in d/w and a pipe? I mean, he'll outgrow the pipe, but not the driftwood, right?
