I'm starting to wonder about this. Although my Jag was sold to me as a male and sure has the markings, pointy fins and body shape of a male Jag, he really has a stubby looking vent tube that is pretty visible most of the time. I know there is a lot of variation between cichlids but I thought all males have narrow, longer and pointier vent tubes. If a male Jag's vent tube is that big a female's must be enormous. Great looking female if he's actually a she though. In my previous post "Jumping back into fishkeeping" you can clearly see the vent tube in the video.

Males and females do not look alike. Yours is male. 100% guaranteed.

Yeah he's a spitting image of all the male jag pics I've seen. Now I'm wondering why his vent tube is so big. Not even going to attempt to pull him out of the water for a photo lol. Sitting on the ground and looking up I can see at the base the vent is even fatter than the anus. Strange, but I've looked this up on mfk's too and found a similiar post of a very female looking vent (was a red devil) only to be proven a male when it bred with a female thought be a male lol.

I figured with the being domestically raised the chances of inbreeding are probably pretty high and my Jag might have been female with male attributes. Thanks for answering my question Suprd71.
