Petenia splendida
Common name: Red Bay Snook

Origin: Mexico, Guatemala, Belize

Adult size: Males 18-20 inches. Females 12

General: There are two variants of this fish with the popular one in the aquarium trade being the red which is the rarer one in nature. The other is sometimes called the 'Green Bay Snook'. Though a peaceful fish, care must be taken due to the predatory nature and huge mouth and appetites these fish have. Though not likely to start any fights, there exists the possibility they can inhale and try to eat tankmates up to half their size. So care needs to be taken as to tankmate size. The biggest threat is actually that other cichlid tankmates may be too aggressive.

Personal info on my snook: My snook of course is named.... Snooki, lol. It resisides in a 210g community tank with other large cichlids, bichir and pleco. The fish came from Rapp's and has proven to be very greedy with its eating habits, though it has not tried to eat tankmates yet. It is very easy going and peaceful.

This is one of my favorite pics to give you an idea of their predatory nature:
