Its difficult to say. test water weekly and if your nitrates go above 40 then you will needd to do bigger or more frequent water changes. You may find yourself doing 3 large water changes a week

If your ammonia or nitrite go above 0 then you will need more filtration unless something has gone wrong with your filter

When I had a large plec in my 55 gallon with my oscar it was essential to do at least 3 changes a week, and even with good filtration the nitrates would be a continual issue.

I think in this case 3 nice sized changes a week are pretty essential.

It seemed like your 3 fish got along well form the videos. I am pretty sure I have seen your video browsing youtube before. cool stuff.

Which OScar out of the 3 did you re-home? Having 2 in the 75 would work out with your filtration and large/frequent waterchanges.

Sounds like the wood should be store bought.....I was thinking that. My father said to bake the rocks but I guess boiling would work too

Boiling the rocks works well, I would recommend mopani for the wood. It is readily avaliable from fish stores, and can have some cool colors and shapes. More importantly it sinks and rots very, very slowly compared to other softer woods. You are still going to have to treat the driftwood too though through soaking and boiling unless you want a tea stained tank, and even then you might have some tannic acid stained water for a bit. Personally I have 2 pieces and never had any issue with it, though.

Design it yourself, man...whats the fun in having someone else aquascape for you. You'll find that once you get into it you'll constantly be looking for other cool pieces of wood and rocks. I would use petoskey stones since they are near me, unfortunately they are a fossilized coral so I think it would mess with the ph. With the stones you can buy some white vinegar and test the rocks before you boil them to make sure they're not limestone or anything.

Nicki-Sue, I filled it with water, and it was sucking water but it was not filling filter casing with water (filter does not leak!).
Delboybully, there are no blockages, I cleaned it right before i set it up.
Cebosound, I will have to agree.

Its either a physical blockage or an air lock. so completely empty the filter and make sure all the pipes and filter are unblocked (check the impeller too). Also check in the filter where the pipes go in, you may need something flexi to poke into the holes in the filter. You have to check everywhere

Set the filter up on the tank and have the output above the water line. suck on the outlet of the filter where it puts water into the tank. The filter should fill. If it doesnt then you have a blockage somewhere

If the filter still doesnt fill then empty the filter completely again.

Now disconnect the inlet pipe at the filter. Suck on the inlet pipe and see if water come out (have a bucket handy). If water comes out fast then it is unblocked.

Then empty this pipe out and connect it to the filter and disconnect the outlet pipe. Suck on where the outlet pipe should connect on the filter and see if the filter fills. If it does then the filter is unblocked.

Now blow on the outlet pipe at the end that connects to the filter. You should get bubbles in the tank. Having done all 3 of these you should now know where any blockage is

just a quick thought, when you are trying to fill the filter, you should have the outlet pipe above the water line!!!

Take it apart including the impeller to remove any stones, then refill and try to get it working. If it still wont work get another filter ASAP (leave the filter switched off but full of water). When you get the new filter transfer the media to the new filter (if it only has sponges then put them in the new filter).

The filter should have some sort of grid to stop stones getting into the filter. Are you sure its stones, could it be sand from where you removed it, or a coincidence of the filter failing at the same time you changed the substrate

If the filter is the type that is in the tank, then it wont be enough for large oscars so you will need to buy an external cannister filter anyway. Get one rated for a tank twice as big as your tank (if you have a 100g tank get a filter rated for 200g)

Phil was the poo. I always thought it'd be fun to hang out and drink with that guy.

I can't believe that it took so long for you to hear that Penn! Here on the PNW coast the Deadliest Catch crews are pretty much family. A lot of them are from here. I've met the Hildstrand brothers. The Maverick is based here and the Quashnicks live here. I went to school with their daughters as well as their crew members. Same with the Ax Men guys. I know the Brownings. It's funny because these shows have turned all of them into local celebrities for tourists. LOL

That was very nice. That fish trying to eat two worms at once was quite funny. They weren't showing any signs of oxygen depletion so obviously the inlet was oxygenating the water okay. I agree about being overstocked, although the fish were fairly small at this moment in time, some of them do have the potential to get very big and most certainly get too big for a tank of that size. However, I'm sure that the person who owns the aquarium is aware of that, or I hope they are anyway.

well, you already had answer what a bypass discharge is...actually it is an
split pipe discharge to scattered the water flow inside the tank....

in some of my project, i totally remove everything inside and use the
whole assembly as submersible pumps only.... the filtration system was
built 5 meters away and just piped back to the tank.....
similar principle of application

@ cebosound, pls do post pics so that we can chime in for an idea....

My parents wouldn't let me use my filter or air pump so it ended up dying. I was about to upgrade to a 40 gallon tank from the 30 gallon that I had.

JD's color does fluctuate quite a bit, especially as juvi's. When you get them home and give them good hiding places, water quality, etc... they will darken up nicely. Then the colors will develop.

Keep in mind that not all JD's are created equal. Some strands have more colors than others. Unless you see the parents, or get a larger one, ... it's kind of luck of the draw though.

I agree noddy. I think those Red Tail Catfish are awesome. I would love to have one some day. BUt they are just too big. I saw the guy from RiverMonsters catch one several months back and it weighed like 300 pounds i think. I wish there was a smaller version of the same fish. i just really dig there movement, colors, and the way they eat.

The one in the vid is supposedly a cross between a Red Tail Catfish and a Tiger Shovelnose Catfish. I think they mention on the info that it is a natural wild caught mix. (but who knows) . cool behaivor either way.

@Necro, I didn't know you had a tiger shovelnose catfish. I would love to see a video of your cat. :)

we do need those test results so ASAP please

Also is the fish floating at the surface or is he gasping at the surface. Does he ever try to swim down but then float up?

It is unlikely to be bacterial or a parasite, most likely is swim bladder or lack of oxygen

Can you post a pic or even better a video

Has things improved since adding the air bubbles

Also your tank is only big enough for 1 oscar. You havent enough room for the plec. They are very messy fish and add loads to the bio load. If i were you i would rehome the plec

Its normal for this sort of thing to happen when adding a new oscar to a tank. I wouldnt worry unless one gets beaten badly or is miserable (hiding all the time)

If an oscar gets beaten and you are not sure if it is badly beaten, then post a pic and we will be able to tell you if its bad

3 oscars are not good to be kept together and aften ends in aggression andn injuries, sometimes death. Also 3 oscars in a 90g is reallt too many so you will have to look into rehoming sooner or later. Better sooner before you become attached to them, which makes the decision even harder

Yes you should see a tankmaker that makes very large tanks and also a LFS that sells a good variety of healthy fish.

Also unless you have lots of money in the bank, then you might need to see a bank manager for a loan :-D :-D :-D

This is a vid of my brothers tank. Not completely black on black, but does have black gravel and a dark background... it may help for a visual example.

if you don't mind to gravel vac, the gravel will hold and cover up any debris that builds up during the week.
That a pro for me.
Plus I like the look better than a bare bottom.
The gravel seems to suit the background and the wood in my tank and makes it complete, imo.

I still havent figured out exactly where Im moving to. Ive read what people have posted here and heres what Ive come up with:

1. I will move the tank et al. last
2. I will get a 5 gallon bucket for my fish and fill it with tank water and cover it with a lid (air holes drilled in
3. I dont have a canister filter. I have to HOB filters, one filled with bioballs rather than carbon filters, one bio-wheel, and one water pump with a sponge filter. I will fill another 5 gallon bucket and place all filter media and/or pumps inside.
4. Im not going to be able to get all the water out of the substrate [sand] so Im going to try and keep about 1 inch to a half an inch of water in the tank during transport
5. Im going to have to start the tank cycle all over :(

I have never been so upset with someone in my whole life. Ive never felt as equally sad and angry as I do now. I hope this philandering t**t gets whats coming to her. :(:(

Ok... tank is full and the driftwood is now secure (fingers crossed). I had to drain the tank from the first fill-up because the wood came untied. I have transfered the O and 2 firemouths... they seem to be doing fine.
On a side note I was at my lfs and eyeballed a large (5in) green severum. I was trading in some stuff so I had credit for most of it. Got the fish home and everything was fine... until I woke up. The severum was whipping my O's ass. I promptly fished him out and back to the store he went. I swapped him for another O. Hopefully they won't kill each other.

http://www.wetwebmedia.com/ca/volume_6/volume_6_1/thiaminase.htm

you might wanna rethink the breeding of oscars, for you may be successfull.
We have a member that has bred a batch recently, only to find out she's got over 700 oscars now.
you better have a good home for where the babies can go, once they have arrived, before getting into breeding... ;)

No there is not 1 tank that is single species. I have a guppy tank, a turtle tank, an oscar tank. I also have several smaller tanks I use for Q/hospital/fry raising tanks. I have a few smaller BN's that still have some growing to do. I do plan on putting a female in there with him.

Beef heart is often mentioned as a good food for oscars. The reason its beef heart is that its cheap and its easy to get some meat without fats. Animal fats are not good for oscar, as they cant process the fat and its gives oscar fatty liver disease which can result in a dead oscar.

Now for lambs hearts, its ok as long as you only feed the meaty bit without the fats.

Check this link for foods for oscars

No more loses and things are settling down in the 180g. 4 CL's came out for food today

The problem i have now is in the 100g. The fish i left in the 100g were the 2 oscars, 2 hoplo cats and 2 bristle noses (all these were orignally in there) and i left a severum from the 180g in there. The 2 oscars were great to each other and had no problems. However now the sev and 1 oscar seem to dislike the other oscar. I originally thought 1 oscar was sulking but it seems he is being pushed around and is in fact keeping out of the way in a bottom corner.

I am guessing that the original balance and pecking order has been disturbed by adding all the fish, and then removing them. What i intend to do is to put a divider in tomorrow and put the oscars on one side and the sev on the other. Leave it that way for a week or so and then remove the divider and hopefully they will all get on!!!!

Every now and then i used to have my ph fall from 7 to 6 with no changes to decor food or water changes. I put a small amount of crushed coral in the filter and i find my ph never drops below seven. I believe you have to find the right amount of coral for your system because if you put too much in it will raise the ph up into the 8s and if you dont put enough in it will do nothing. There are also buffers that are supposed to keep a stable ph but i do not have experience with these to tell ya if they are good or not.

Thanks Capt Dave, but I believe I found the issue(s). Firstly it seems to be the new diet I have been giving my Oscar, seems his system did not digest it 100% so he ended up passing it right back into the water. 2nd I haven't cleaned my canister filter for well over 2 months. So after reverting back to his old diet and cleaning the canister my readings have stayed stable for the past 2 days.

Gazza I am using a powerhead on my 850 litre Oscar tank. Its a Hydor Koralia 4, has plenty of flowing power and gives good circulation, I can recommend them for your purpose. I would stay away from the ones on eBay they are mud!, the dodgey knockoffs have a steel impellor shaft which basically rusts as soon as it touches water whereas the real deal have a ceramic shaft and are much better quality while using a tiny amount of power.
What I like is the fact you can move the powerhead to just the right angle to give good circulation aswell as water movement at the surface (I use this instead of an air pump)

Have a gander at this site http://www.aquariumproducts.com.au/powerheads.php
They are up near you in Qld, I got my 6ft twin light unit from them no problems plus postage is on $7.50 Australia wide regardless of weight.

I agree the black background (or any very dark background) would be too much and make it difficult to read. Considering your color scheme for the site, probably more of an off white or greyish color would help from making the screen seem too bright.

It really isn't about me staring at the screen too long. Its usually more noticable when I first go to the forum from other sites, because I find myself adjusting my brightness on my monitor while viewing this forum.

Again, I love the forum. I think you have done an amazing job with the site Penn. It may be just more of a personal preference. Thanks for taking my thought into consideration. :)

adding a new oscar in a existing oscar tank is risky, you wont know until you try. Some oscar are very tank proud and wont tolerate a new intruder. Add the oscar and hope things turn out ok but as nickisue says have a back up plan. A divider will solve the problem temporary but if they still dont get on after it is removed then returning to the shop is one option. another tank is also a option

If you have to divide then, leave them separated for 2 weeks, then put the existing oscar into the other side. If they get on (no serious damage) for a few days you can them remove the divider. If the new one bullies the existing one then seperate them again for a week or so and then remove the divider. If either bullies badly the other then give up and accept they will never get on. Good luck

If i read things right you have 2 oscars in a 60g. Well 60g is not really big enough for 2 oscar, 75g is the minimum. You do need to get a test kit for Ph, ammonia, nitrite and nitrate. In the meantime do a 25% water change every 2 days. Only feed what they will eat in 2 mins

I USED ALREADY CYCLED WATER FROM OLD TANK IN THE 2 FOOT TANK

He lived 3 years in 4 foot tank very happy,
then had to move house so used aready cycled water from 4 foot tank and placed it in 2 foot tank and then placed fish in (using half aready cycled water half tap water), he seemed okay until there was nitrite spike in the 2 foot tank so i took him out and put him back into his old 4 foot tank which had been cycled for a month.

When we talk about a cycled tank we mean a cycled filter. taking water from an established tank and putting it another tank doesnt mean a cycled tank. Read the section cycling. I am now convinced your problems are due to poor water quality due to an uncycled tank (filter). Do daily 25% water changes until your tank is cycled (ammonia and nitrite 0 and nitrate rising!)

The bacteria just appear where there is ammonia. When you do a partial water change you reduce the concentration of ammonia (too high and your oscar could get ill or even die) but there will still be some ammonia left so the bacteria will eat and multiply and eventually your tank will cycle - ammonia and nitrite 0 and nitrate rising.

Once cycled clean your filter is old tank water every couple months (the frequency depends on how much filtration you have).

Also once your tank had cycled test your water weekly before a water change. If your nitrate is above 40 then you need to do bigger or more frequent water change

Wow, bad timing indeed :(

Email I recieved from the town

Dave,

In the past few weeks the chlorine residual has been slightly higher than we normally run. This was done for several reasons. This time of year we conduct hydrant flushing to clear the water mains of unwanted debris and other material in the pipeline. During the flushing residents may experience dirty water and in conjunction with that we try to carry a higher residual to protect the consumer from possible contamination. Also during the last few weeks we conducted an inspection of our water storage reservoirs. This inspection done approximately every 5 years requires divers to enter our tanks with underwater diving apparatus to inspect, clean and photograph the interior. I like to have a higher chlorine residual during this time to help prevent contamination. The chlorine residual at all times is kept well within the State and Federal guidelines.

You should see less noticeable chlorine residual in the near future. It will be near the level it has historically been.

Thank you for your concern and let me know if you have any other questions.

i found a localy owned pet store call "something fishy" the owner is a very nice guy that after i told him what happend to pip was more then willing to help me find just what i want in the oscars. i told him about the "blood red oscars" he is calling the people that he orders from and is going to help me find a place to get 2 of them from. i have to say out of all the different types of oscars i have seen the "blood red" are by far the most beautiful. hell i think that they are hte most beautiful fish i have ever seen..
here is a vid of one. some people are caling them blood reds and some call them super reds... so i am sure that my quest in getting 2 wont be easy.

I used the same containers woman usually use to put in shoes or other clothing items some people also use them in the garage to put tools and other things in they are about 15 liters. Filled it halfway with potting soil added the worms. I throw in whatever kitchen waste I have stuff like banana peels or anything that will decompose quickly in the soil. Grass cuttings when mowing the lawn work too just work it into the soil same with leaves ect.

I use one of those bottles with the pray head to keep the ground moist put too much water in the ground ad the worms will drown.
