Darth Nandopsis created the topic: Buy American cars OR buy foreign cars?

I was a Ford guy for years......I have had 3 of them (Fairmount, Tempo, Escort SW), & I loved them, but they were in the shop VERY frequent ly.

My father was a Dodge/Chrysler guy, he had a '68 Dodge Coronet (which was my 1st car, it was cancer rideen when I had it, I Bondo'd the shit out of it, but that bad-boy was F-A-S-T!!! :woohoo: ), a 88 New Yorker, & a Jeep Grand Cherokee....& all had tons of mechanical problems.

I am now a Honda guy, & he's a Toyota guy.....I have well over 115,000 on my CRV, & he's got well over a 100,000 on his Tacoma....the only thing I've done major is the timing belt & a new radiator, my Dad's truck not anything major that I know of.

That being said, is it wrong to purchase foreign cars? I am not anti-union, & I love my country & have served my country.....but even though American cars have gotten better over the years, they still are not as relaible as foreign cars( especially Japanese cars)....& the major reason American cars are so expensive is the UAW workers make outrageous hourly wages...I remember reading some of those workers on the assembly line make around $65/hr, & that is definitely factored in to the sticker price!!!

I bought my '01 Honda CRV in '05....9 years & it still runs like a clock. Sadly, I don't think I would buy an American car ever again.....the repair bills were too high & far too frequent. :(

Thoughts?

Allot of the foreign car companies have factories here and I totally would have no problem buying foriegn made cars. Another reason why American car prices are what they are is because they are mostly sold here. The us gives soft trade deals to other countries ...basically your not buying a ford in china. Meanwhile they can flood our market with their products. Imo its about what is more reliable and cheaper

My first car was a Chrysler Voyager which was imported from Phoenix Arizona. It was a great car I loved it. Unfortunately the year and make of my car had been fitted with a faulty ABS system. Plus the four-speed gearbox was described on the Internet as a "lemon" I had quite a few years of trouble-free motoring. However one day the ABS light came on and wouldn't go out. It turned out this make of Chrysler Voyager had been recalled a few years earlier because of the ABS system. After some fighting with my local Chrysler dealership, I managed to get my car covered under the recall and replaced the faulty parts. Sadly, they made the vehicle even worse because they didn't fitted properly. Also, the gearbox which they had replaced a year earlier and started playing up again. So in the end, I scrapped the vehicle and now drive a Mercedes sprinter van which is really nice.

I wouldn't have a problem with another Chrysler Voyager, I really like them. When It comes to reliability, the Mercedes sprinter is very difficult to beat

Import. I've had some Honda's over the years civic, prelude, accord, but my family was all about the VW's so I drove a couple of those and then made the switch a number of years ago to BMW and i don't think I'll ever drive anything else. On my third one now which is a 330ci that I've had since almost new. It's 12 years old now and is still a great working fun car! My wife is still partial to the VW's and drives a newer GTI which is a fun car to drive as well. She is starting to like the BMW X3 so I may have her converted. She also likes the Audi Q5 so I'm not sure what the next vehicle will be, but it will be German. Tough, easy to work on and they don't get that tin can feeling after a few years. I'll keep my car until it's drove into the ground though, but we need the SUV for practicality. I've always found domestic vehicles feel cheap, from the interior to the road feel.

domestic cars are more affordable .. and gives a better incentive!!!! but that means you have to bring the car for services more often ....... i had an 99 accord for 10+ years with 150+K's on it ..... i sold it due to room...''''baby'''' .... lol

I'm not brand loyal to any car manufacturer. I've owned Fords, Chevys, Volkswagens, Jeeps, Hondas, Toyotas, and Suzukies (sp?).

I certainly feel absolutely no loyalty to the big, greedy United Auto Workers union up north, who think nothing of shutting down small, non union, parts factories in my area every time they go on strike for higher wages/better benefits, causing the workers in my local factories to be laid off until the UAW comes to a contract agreement.

The Japanese competition in the 1980s/1990s was a good thing, IMO, because it forced the American car manufacturers to build better quality vehicles. The quality of just about any vehicle you buy these days is much, much better than it was 20 or 30 years ago.
